What a backyard ultra is

One loop.
Every hour.
One last soul.

The simplest format in ultrarunning and the hardest to survive. There is no distance to reach and no overall time limit — only the next bell, and then the one after that. Places are allocated through a combination of LSU team selection and a random draw: request a race entry for an open event.

Four rules.
That is all.

Everything else is a detail.

01

Everyone starts together

On the hour, the whole field leaves the same corral.

More

No staggered starts, no seeding. A first-timer sets off next to a national record holder.

02

6.706 km, sixty minutes

One loop is a yard. Be back before the next bell.

More

You have until the hour turns to finish the loop and stand in the corral, ready to go again.

03

Miss the bell, you are out

No grace period, no appeal — at yard 3 and at yard 93.

More

Not in the corral when the hour turns, race over. However far you had come.

04

One loop more than the rest

Nobody knows if this is one night or four.

More

The winner finishes one yard nobody else can. If no one manages it, there is no winner and everyone is a DNF.

Your rest is
what you saved.

Eating, sleeping and kit all come out of the hour you just ran in.
